ping pong and Thai birthdays

Sorry for the delay in posting!

Things have been very relaxed here. We're still not teaching at the high school so we just have 3 hours of office work a day before our 4:15 classes. It's been a great break and we've had more time for other activities.

One of which is the new addition to our home- a ping pong table!! The doctor and Penong had one at their house they weren't using so we asked to borrow it for the year. It's in our living room and has proven to be loads of fun. Justin and I are both getting very good at it.

The other big news is that I had a Thai birthday here on the 7th. It was a really excellent bday. In the morning Justin got me fresh squeezed oj and we went to the island in our river and walked around. At work all the staff gave me cards and little gifts that were very sweet. Justin had both his classes make cards and come sing to me.

Here are some funny quotes from my bday cards Justin's students made me:

"Aleza is pink"

"Aleza happy
Aleza tall
Aleza nice"

"You are Aleza is tall
You are love you Aleza
You are Aleza is nice"

"Dear Aleza, give happy and very money
Tom and people room"

"she is happy or she is clever"

After work Justin and I went to our favorite restaurant then off to Swensen's for a four pound bday cake. All the teachers and Thai staff came for that. To end the evening some teachers came to our house and played ping pong.

Here is everyone at Swensens.

All around a very excellent bday.

Last Sunday we had a big dinner to celebrate the Doctor's bday (on the 6th) my birthday and the departure of a Thai staff, Mook, who is going to work as a nanny in LA. I'm very excited to hear how she likes the US.

Here are all the ladies of Mathus on the Doctor and Penong's yard before dinner. Mook is on the far right in the white shirt.

Here's everyone at the dinner.

Here's a recent find on a menu in Surat- fried Jew's ear. We think it's possibly a result of the ongoing Muslim insurgency in the South of Thailand.

My mom comes on the 3rd- I'm very excited!!! We're also still working on plans and logistics for our drive to India. My other love Nina is planning on buying her tickets this month! She's trying to come join our travels and she's also hiking up to Everest base camp in Nepal.

Has spring come in America? Anyone doing anything fun for Spring break? We miss everyone!!!

Justin and Aleza,

This is Rod. I will be in Cambodia this summer, starting in mid-May...I may even be in Chiang Mai briefly towards the beginning of the trip; perhaps we can arrange a rendezvous? Drop me an email or fbook message or some such.

I hope you are enjoying yourselves!

(At first I wanted to punctuate that with a period but I felt like that could be construed as sarcasm. It now appears to me that the exclamation point has not lessened the likelihood of that interpretation being made.)
