Reflections on Thailand/ Less than a week to go

We are down to 6 days in Thailand. Pretty nuts! I'm having trouble wrapping my mind around it. So this weekend on our way back from Khanom Justin and I started some lists about what we'll miss and what we can do without. Here's what we came up with . . .

Mai Ow (No want) . . .
  • Ants
  • Heat
  • No kitchens
  • Cold showers
  • No showers
  • Macs breaking here with no one to repair them
  • "Do you have baby" (while patting your tummy)
  • Burning trash piles
  • Trash
  • [Justin] Teaching, working, high school
  • Bad smells
  • Lack of walking trails
  • Lack of food options
  • Getting cut in lines
  • No seasons

  • Tuk tuk rides
  • Kho Sok damn
  • Long tail boats
  • Learning/speaking Thai
  • 'Wai' ing people
  • Thai people's sense of humor about death and natural disasters
  • Being able to cut people off when driving as long as you give a little honk 1st
  • Having fast food (McDonalds, Burger King) be a 'fancy' meal
  • Cucumbers with every meal
  • Really spicy food
  • Being cooked for at nearly every meal
  • P' Chart and P' Yu
  • Sunday dinners
  • David's slap game
  • Something blooming all year
  • The sunset and sunrise times staying the same all year
  • Pay as you go cell phones
  • Motherly restaurateurs who feed us daily
  • The mild celebrite of the foreigner in Surat

  • Water Buffalo
  • "Where you go?"
  • People immediately loving you for saying something in Thai
  • P'Lek
  • Jim getting flustered and rubbing her face when I ask "how are you?"
  • Strangers telling you "soi"
  • Thai men massaging Justin's arm
  • Visiting P'Aon and P' Pong in the country
  • Driving our motorbike in the country
  • Simple Thai grammar (no want; age how much?)
  • Students attacking you with stickers
  • Nan (Justin's student): "I so sorry Justin" and then speaking in Thai
  • Nan
  • "Hallo"
  • Googly Eyes Sr. and Googly Eyes Jr.
  • Traveling every other weekend
  • Staying in fancy bungalows (not sleeping in our cars)
  • Feeling wealthy
  • Teachers and staff at Mathus
  • Thai people offering you beer as you walk home from work
  • Walking to work
  • Speaking England English
  • Khanom
  • All the staff at Rhabian Sai Resort
That's all we can think of for now. I'm sure we'll add more soon.

Wrapping everything up this week- shipping stuff home, transferring money, giving things away, etc. Friday night there's another boat love and then on Saturday all the other teachers go on holiday (except for Andrea and Jason). We'll have our last Sunday dinner and then Monday we leave at 7pm (provided the planes are still going and immigration goes smoothly- knock on wood).

Oh and the water did come on after two days instead of a week. I guess that rumor was untrue :)

Can't wait to see everyone in a couple months (Jan and Dan in a week!!)

Happy early birthday Dad!!

Love and wais!

Hi Kids:
What a great list of what you'll miss and not! I love the googly eyed kids, Jr. and Sr. When you get back home, try to bring as many of the things that you loved about Thailand back into your lives in the States. Eat spicy fish heads, wai people, ride your bikes, have Sunday dinners, play David's slap game, walk to work, and feel wealthy no matter what. We are so proud of both of you for taking this 'leap of faith' into a brand new culture and adventure and for doing such a fabulous job of teaching and of learning the entire time. All of the wonderful things that you have experienced will become even more important to you the longer that you are away from Thailand and will enrich your lives in ways that you won't believe. We are soooo looking forward to seeing both of you next week. We love you and miss you and wish you a safe journey to Europe to begin your next new adventure. Love, Dad and Mom (Dan and Jan)

hey guys! what a list! i was looking over my journal from the trip there (i gave a speech on it in my speech class!) and i was remembering just how great it was! i had a similar list that i had made and a lot of it gave me a giggle! what fun!! it was good to see that your "like" list was way longer than your "mai ow" list! because even through all the bad times and experiences you had, you will have so much more great memories to carry with you. i can't wait to see you guys in a few short months! it will be quite the temperature shock, coming back to chicago in december! it definitely freaked me out a bit and i had only been in the heat for 2 weeks! anyway, good luck with the travels out of thailand and i hope you are able to keep up the blog, somewhat, while you're in europe! love to you both :) love, jess!
